The Leadership Maturity Framework (LMF), developed by Susanne Cook-Greuter, is a comprehensive model that outlines the stages of adult ego development, focusing on how individuals make meaning of their experiences. Building upon Jane Loevinger's ego development theory, the LMF describes nine distinct stages, each representing a more complex and integrated way of understanding oneself and the world.  [1]

The Nine Stages of Leadership Maturity

  • 2/3 Self-Centric (Opportunist): Individuals at this stage are driven by personal needs and opportunistic behaviors, with a limited concern for rules or the impact on others. [3]
  • 3 Group-Centric (Diplomat): Here, individuals seek to conform and belong, emphasizing harmony and avoiding conflict, often adhering strictly to group norms.[3]
  • 3/4 Skill-Centric (Expert): At this stage, individuals value expertise and logic, focusing on perfecting their skills and often displaying a critical attitude towards differing opinions.[3]
  • 4 Self-Determining (Achiever): Achievers are goal-oriented, capable of complex problem-solving, and can balance immediate needs with long-term objectives, often seeking personal growth and effectiveness. [3]
  • 4/5 Self-Questioning (Individualist): Individuals begin to recognize the limitations of their own perspectives, appreciating complexity and the contextual nature of truth, leading to increased tolerance for differences. [4]
  • 5 Self-Actualizing (Strategist): Strategists are adept at integrating multiple perspectives, leading transformative change, and aligning personal and organizational values with actions.
  • 5/6 Construct-Aware (Magician): At this stage, individuals become aware of the constructed nature of reality and identity, embracing paradoxes and the fluidity of experience. [3]
  • 6 Unitive (Ironist): The last stage, where individuals embody a deep sense of interconnectedness, transcending ego, and experiencing unity with the larger whole.
